Best Day in the Life: This season, June 22 to August 21, 2005
we spotlight composers whose music tells the tale of their lives. The Self has always been fertile ground for artistic exploration. Composers have tackled this ineffable, inexhaustible subject in various and fascinating ways. Haydn's Farewell Symphony (August 5) is a saucy, spirited gesture toward freedom, written at the end of a long summer at the estate of his demanding employer, Prince Esterházy. And the somber Symphony No. 6 by a troubled Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky has been forever linked with questions about his death—barely a week after its premiere. These and personal works by Elgar, Berg, Mahler, and others will constitute a central aspect of the AMFS's 2005 season.
2005 marks the second year for the AMFS mini-festivals, five to seven days of related events that explore an era, composer, or theme in concentrated fashion. Look for the mini-festivals throughout the summer, including Forbidden Music: Conscientious Objectors (June 27–July 1), Postcards from Latin America (July 31–August 6), and A Grand Tour of the Baroque (August 15–20).
Every Day, a Bouquet
The AMFS presents as many as ten events daily. Whichever day you're here, look for these regular and frequent events in the handy guide to the AMFS. (Certain weeks, the below-listed days and times may differ; details are available in late April on our Season Calendar or on weekly tearsheets available region-wide all summer.)
