Best Day in the Life:
ACSD has been bringing smiles to the faces of thousands of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children since it first opened its doors over 30 years ago but this camp is so much more than having fun. ACSD conducts both summer and winter recreational, cultural, and experiential education programs that are truly significant and therapeutic. For many campers, it is their first experience being in a place where deafness is not a disability. Within the camp’s nurturing yet challenging environment, the children’s everyday struggles to understand others and be understood are nearly eliminated. Their “Deafness,” rather than being a barrier to relationships, contributes to powerful bonds of mutual understanding and friendship with each other. At ACSD, the children are no longer on the outside looking in. Instead, they are initiators, leaders, and participants. Learning to ski or snowboard, rafting a river, riding a horse, acting in a play, pitching a tent, or writing a story for the camp Newsletter are enjoyable in themselves. But these activities are also carefully designed to foster cooperation, decision-making, independence, responsibility, safety consciousness, self-reliance, and self-esteem.
